A thermic site on the Constantiaberg massif above the Tokai forest and Cape Town's southern suburbs, reached only after a long walk from limited vehicle access.

Table Mountain National Park requirements

Licence required: Advance Grade licence for paragliding (Basic-licence pilots only under supervision); B grade for hang gliding (no A-licence sign-offs) — some Silvermine launches require C grade.

Access needs prior permission from SAFCOL (the plantation operator) as well as TMNP, via the cyclists' car park near Tokai Manor House — collect the gate key from the attendant there and drive up with care for horses and cyclists on the road. Maximum two vehicles, none left unattended; pilots should be dropped off rather than parking along the road, and vehicle access is time-restricted around hiker traffic on the route. No night flying, no damaging vegetation. (Per the Oct 2004 TMNP EMP — confirm current requirements with SAHPA/TMNP.)

Hazards & cautions

Watch for berg-wind conditions — don't fly in strong or gusty wind.

Launch & landing

Launch from the crest above the last bend in the access road below the radio mast (east side), or from a bend in the road about a kilometre before the mast overlooking Hout Bay (west side) — roughly 700m above the valley (850m ASL, 1200m ceiling). Land on Hout Bay beach (west) or at the school field beside Tokai Manor House (east), avoiding the vineyards, golf estate, and any fields used for horses.

Access

Vehicle access to the mast requires prior arrangement and a gate key; a 4x4 or diff-lock vehicle is preferred for the climb. On foot, the walk in from the end of the Noordhoek access road takes over an hour.
