Licence required: Basic licence with 40 flights (paragliding) — first-time pilots need a supervised launch, visiting or up-country pilots need a local briefing and supervised launch. C licence (hang gliding); B-licence pilots may be signed off by a C-licence pilot familiar with the site.
Launch only from the designated site above the Tafelberg Road car park. No night flying and no damaging vegetation. Launching outside the designated area carries SANParks penalties, escalating to a site ban. (Per the Oct 2004 TMNP EMP — confirm current requirements with SAHPA/TMNP.)
Hazards & cautions
Flyable northerly conditions are rare and often turn out to be a turbulent "berg wind" off the interior, which isn't suitable for flying.
Launch & landing
Launch from a fynbos-covered slope just above the end of the access road, about 250m above the landing (450m ASL, 1200m ceiling). Land in the vacant lots east of the Cape Technicon campus; the school playing field below the highway works as a tight emergency option.
Access
Drive up toward the Table Mountain Cableway and continue to the end of Tafelberg Road, then follow the path back above the parking area.
Background
A flight from this general area to Camps Bay via Signal Hill is on record (Ian de Vries, March 2006).
