Table Mountain National Park requirements

Licence required: Basic licence with 40 flights (paragliding) — first-time pilots need a supervised launch, visitors need a local briefing and supervised launch. B licence (hang gliding) — no sign-offs for A-licence pilots, given limited landing options and complex local weather.

Designated launch points: Little Lion's Head Aerial, Little Lion's Head Slope

Launch only from the designated Little Lion's Head points. No night flying and no damaging vegetation. Launching outside designated areas carries SANParks penalties, escalating to a site ban. (Per the Oct 2004 TMNP EMP — confirm current requirements with SAHPA/TMNP.) Note: the EMP refers to this massif as "Little Lion's Head" (Kleinleeukop) — same feature as Llandudno.

Hazards & cautions

Alternating hot and cold air on launch signals a berg wind mixing with the coastal westerly and often means severe turbulence aloft. The site can be hard to read — conditions that look flyable from the ground can turn out very strong once airborne, with few good outs beyond gaining height and running for the low point near the venturi. The venturi near the radio mast is intense, as air funnels through toward Hout Bay. Check the beach landing area before flying, as available sand varies with the tide.

Launch & landing

A direct launch beside the radio mast exists but isn't recommended due to the strong venturi; a safer option is a five-minute walk further west onto the main face. Height is about 280m with a 1200m ceiling. The beach offers a small landing area (approach from the sea); slope-landing is also viable given the amount of lift typically present.

Access

Via the coastal road from Camps Bay toward Hout Bay, turning off toward Llandudno and following the signposted route to the radio mast gate.

Background

A flight to Signal Hill and return, then on to Glen Cairn, is recorded from this site (Abe Meyer, 2003).
